Supporting youth mental health.
For some young people, engaging with others and making friends can sometimes feel like a confusing, or even impossible, task.
But what if gaming created a reality where you could belong to a clan and feel more comfortable interacting with others?
At genU GAMER, we use imagined worlds to create better realities. We support participants to engage socially in an environment that is safe and structured, and with like-minded peers.
Gaming at GAMER
GAMER uses fantasy, play, and gaming to build real-world skills, no matter what type of player someone is.
The games we play include:
- Console games
- RPGs
- Card games like Magic the Gathering and Pokémon
- Hobby board games
… and more!
Using gaming to support growth
We believe in our clients’ ability to continuously grow.
Like levels in a video game, GAMER is designed as a journey to be completed zone by zone as each area of skill gets stronger.
Our qualified youth mental health facilitators (we call them “Dragon Wranglers”) are there to support each interaction, fostering resilience to stressful social situations and nurturing confidence.
Our program has been crafted to cater to a range of needs and abilities, helping those who are neurodiverse or on a journey to recovery to train
their interpersonal abilities, develop useful coping strategies, and apply their learning to take control of the life they wish to lead.
The outcomes of GAMER
At GAMER, participants have a one-of-a-kind safe space that helps them to level up their social skills while feeling respected, supported and heard.
By attending programs in RPGs (role-playing games) like Dungeons & Dragons, video games, hobby art and more, we’ve had participants achieve some incredible outcomes:
- Re-engaging with friends and family.
- Managing the trauma of bullying and isolation to take control of their life.
- Returning to and finishing their education.
- Gaining the confidence to find volunteer work & employment.
- Overcoming social anxiety to attend major events, such as the PAX expo—the biggest gaming convention in the Southern Hemisphere.
