Popular gaming group The PopCulturists will help raise funds to support genU’s Applied Gaming Program through their 1000 Subscribers Celebratory 12-Hour Livestream on June 2.
The livestream (starting at 12pm) will broadcast from The PopCulturists YouTube channel to celebrate the group reaching 1000 subscribers, and will feature live video gaming, giveaways, special guests from the gaming industry and live podcasts.
The event will also help raise money for genU’s Applied Gaming Program, which supports young people coping with mental health challenges, and uses the power of role-playing games and board games to help participants develop social and communication skills.
Paris Conte, genU Mental Health Groups Facilitator, said the genU’s gaming program was a great way for participants to build their social skills.
“Through the use of purpose adapted tabletop games, players as part of a small group of peers are encouraged and guided to learn and apply social and communication skills in a structured, safe and fun-focused environment,” Paris said.
“The program also encompasses frustration tolerance, problem solving and understanding the needs and wants of others. Best of all, there is no prior experience with tabletop games required and the player gets to participate at a level that they are comfortable with,” he said.
“genU is looking to expand into a new realm, the digital realm to be exact, with the Applied Video Game Program. Leveraging the same principles used in the original program, we are looking to assist a wider audience of young people.”
Paris will be part of The PopCulturists broadcast on June 2, alongside group members Ryan, Josh, and Dylan. Giveaways include video games and clothing thanks to the generosity of organsiations including Turn Left Distribution, Ubisoft, Nintendo and TAGmods.
Throughout the broadcast people will be able to donate funds towards genU’s Applied Video Game Program.
