Bree advocates for aged care packages that help people stay at home

Q&A with Bree, Home Care Package Case Manager

Bree Hollis says she has found the perfect job as a Home Care Package Case Manager with genU. In her role she supports older people to access care and support services and stay living independently in their own home.

Bree has a driving passion to make a difference in the lives of older people that inspires her work.

Q: What do you enjoy about your job?

A: I’m passionate! I just really love advocating for older people.

So many people aren’t aware home care packages exist, so I want to be that person that can put the word out and let them know that they can continue to stay living at home independently with assistance.

They don’t have to go into aged care – and I know that can be a scary thought for elderly people.

Q: What led you to become a Case Manager to support older people?

A: My experience includes previous roles in disability support and with Triple Zero (000). I was offered an opportunity to work with older seniors as a Case Manager with genU and discovered it was a perfect match! I love it and it’s so rewarding.

I won’t change direction now because I’ve found exactly where I want to be.

Actually, by coincidence, my mum worked in aged care as a Nurse and later as a Case Manager – so it runs in the family!

Q: What does a typical day look like for you?

A: I feel like ‘what don’t we do?’. It doesn’t stop!

We help people to get domestic help, personal care and a whole range of services to be able to stay living in their own home and community.

Today I have been organising support for a client who has gone into hospital. His wife also has a home care package and needs extra assistance as well.

Q: What stops people from accessing aged care services in the home?

A: It’s just that people don’t know enough about it.

Some people, especially men, don’t like to ask for help. They think they might lose their independence, but they come to realise we are there to help them keep their independence.

Q: What would you like to tell the families of older people?

A: There can be a long waiting list to get assessed by My Aged Care, and then approved to start receiving support.

I tell people not to delay starting the process with My Aged Care. Do it now. Don’t wait!
