To mark International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD) on Thursday 3 December 2020, Surf Coast Shire Council will be co-hosting a special edition of genU Connections TV.

“International Day of People with Disability is a day we look forward to celebrating in the Shire and a great chance to acknowledge the amazing people in our community who contribute so much,” says Cr Adrian Schonfelder.

genU’s Lee Considine has been hosting Connections TV during lockdown via Zoom.

The entertainment show features genU Connections participants from the Surf Coast, Bellarine, Geelong and Ballarat areas.

A special edition co-hosted by Council’s Access and Inclusion Officer Susan Firth-McCoy will feature guest appearances by other Council representatives and other local community members.

The show will be streamed at www.facebook.com/genUconnect on Wednesday 2 December at 10am for everyone to share in the fun and enjoy an opportunity to stay connected.

“IDPwD is an important day to acknowledge because sometimes a person’s skills, abilities, talents and contributions can be lost behind a disability label,” said Lee.

“People are people, and the ones we support deserve to be recognised, celebrated and to contribute to the community the same as anyone else.”

Lee has continued the show throughout COVID-19 restrictions, and the project showed him just how important it is for people to stay connected, feel valued and to contribute to each other and their communities.

“We hope everyone will consider tuning in for the IDPwD online Connections TV show – it will be lots of fun, with lots of community members connecting with each other, celebrating ability and highlighting community,” said Lee.

“We’re very happy to be chosen to use the show to help celebrate this important day.”
