When Linda decided to step back from a long and successful career, she wasn’t focusing on slowing down. Instead, she wanted to give back to her community. And that’s exactly what she’s achieved, celebrating ten years volunteering in her community at genU as a valued DoCare outings hostess.
A passion for helping others
Linda was always interested in helping others. She had volunteered at a local
opportunity shop for several years and enjoyed it immensely.
“I enjoy helping people,” Linda said. “I like going out into the community, and meeting people.”
After leaving her work at a lawyer’s office, Linda was faced with new-found spare time. She knew she wanted to continue to do something positive for others through volunteering. A chance conversation with a work colleague who was volunteering at genU as part of the DoCare program for older Australians cemented her interest.
Linda attended a volunteering information session with genU to learn more about the DoCare program. After hearing about the entry-level support services available to the older community, and how the organisation enriched the lives of others, she quickly realised she had found the right volunteering opportunity.
“I help out with bus trips as a DoCare outings hostess, and have previously supported games days at the Newcomb Library,” Linda said.
“I feel like the people I volunteer with appreciate what I do, and they like that I’m there to help them.”
Now in her seventies, Linda hasn’t slowed down and has continued to embrace the chance to help others in her community.
She continues to encourage others to explore and enjoy the wider community through volunteering.
