Dealing with ongoing pain has become a daily reality for Kay.

Injuries from falls combined with osteoporosis have provided challenges for the mother of four, but support from a government funded Home Care Package (HCP) has helped her get on with life.

Kay’s HCP gives her access to a gardener, personal support worker, travel to and from medical appointments and help with household cleaning. Kay has ongoing support from her family, but can also rely on assistance from her dedicated genU case manager.

“It does make a difference having a case manager that you get to know and trust, who helps you get the services you need to improve your daily life,” Kay said.

“You’ve got to have someone who will suggest something you haven’t thought of, and you have to be able to ask lots of questions.”

Kay has lived a full and busy life, caring for her daughter who has Prader-Willi syndrome, while also volunteering with disability organisations.

Kay’s life changed dramatically eight years ago, when her husband suddenly passed away.

“I came out in the kitchen and the coffee cup wasn’t there for me, the tablets weren’t there for me. I went to see what was going on and he was gone – it was such a shock,” Kay said.

“He was always good, he was quite happy to cook a meal or do the dishes, hang the washing out. Even when I was coming into meetings with Donna or going to help out at Karkana, he’d do my chores at home so I could do the things I needed to do.”

Kay said accepting that her life had changed and that she needed help was difficult at first.

“That’s the hardest thing. When you’ve been a carer and looked after someone for years and years, then to have to turn around and accept help – that’s hard,” she said.

“But when you get that help, you can then have a bit of a life. It’s all those little things that make a big difference.”
