Joining the genU Business Enterprises team just over a year ago has not only given Geelong’s Jake Nicholson supported employment, but an increase in confidence that has him thriving in everyday life.
When genU was awarded a contract to provide replenishment services at WorkSafe’s head office in May 2018, Business Enterprises Production Manager Mathew Nitchie knew Jake would be perfect for the role. Jake wasn’t so certain however, and felt anxious he wasn’t up for the job. Showing his resilient nature, Jake agreed to trial it for a week and then see how he was feeling.
Fast-forward 15 months and Jake couldn’t be happier in his role at WorkSafe. Responsible for kitchen and stationery replenishment as well as laundry collection services three days each week, Jake is full of confidence and a welcome face among staff members.
Giving the new role a go despite feeling nervous is a decision Jake is glad he made.
“I was trying to find out where to go for the first month of being there, it was a bit overwhelming at first,” Jake said.
“But when you keep doing it every week it’s kind of like second nature.”
Jake encourages anyone feeling worried about starting a new job to give it a chance.
“If you’re nervous and you’re not feeling confident in doing it I believe you can always have a go,” he said.
“Maybe you’ll find you’re enjoying it in a month or so, and you end up really getting into it like I did.”
In recognition of his achievements, Jake received a nomination in the 2019 Rotary Pride of Workmanship Awards.
Jake’s success in the workplace is a credit to his hardworking and helpful character.
“Jake has never complained about the jobs he has completed and is always willing to help others,” supervisor Mathew Nitchie said.
“Business Enterprises’ role is to provide opportunities and this was a great opportunity for Jake to build his confidence, especially dealing with a customer face-to-face.”
After finishing at WorkSafe each afternoon, Jake travels to Business Enterprises in North Geelong to assist the team in completing their jobs until the day is completed.
