A medical mystery consumed Valerie’s life for more than a year.

Valerie, from the Victorian town of Horsham, had a mild stroke which caused internal bleeding.  The bleeding meant she needed additional blood every three weeks, and caused anxiety and strain on her supportive family.

“They didn’t know where the bleeding was coming from. My son Andrew ended up saying to them ‘all you’re doing is keeping Mum alive, I want her to go to Ballarat’,” Valerie said.

“And the doctor said all they can do is put the camera down that takes photos, and then Andrew said ‘well that’s got to happen, we have to find where she’s bleeding’.

“They did that and they knew straight away – I would say within seconds they knew where the problem was. 13 months it took them to fix it, only this last year have they cleared me.”

Horsham genU client Valerie is living a full life with assistance from a Government-funded genU Home Care Package.

Valerie health has improved after the stroke five years ago, but with her husband in care and her three sons caring for their own families, she realised she needed additional help at home.

genU’s Home Care Packages (HCP) team helped Valerie connect with Government-funded assistance to help her with everyday activities like cleaning, personal care, gardening and meal services.

Valerie said the support she received through her package has given her the confidence to live her life from the comfort of home.

“What I like about it is you’ve got contact with someone. If I had a fall, because I’ve had a few falls, you’ve got contact with somebody just about every day really,” she said.

“I get meals delivered to me every week – it’s been terrific, really terrific.

“And I had a car accident in June, I haven’t had a car and they supplied me with taxi cards so that helps me gets out and about.”

Valerie said genU’s local case managers made accessing services from her HCP funding easy.

“The girls are beautiful, they’re really helpful and they’ve done a lot for me,” she said.

“They always pick up the phone, and they come help me with whatever I need – they’re really good.”

genU coordinates HCPs for people in Horsham, Colac, Warrnambool, Geelong, Melbourne’s Mornington Peninsula and in Adelaide, South Australia.
