genU appoints Dr Chelsea Tobin as new CEO

genU has appointed Dr Chelsea Tobin as its new Chief Executive Officer.

Dr Tobin has extensive experience in the social and community services sector, having led organisations across the children, youth and families, as well as in the domestic violence sectors, following a long standing and accomplished career in the commercial and corporate fields.

Currently the CEO of Safe Steps, Victoria’s 24/7 family violence response service and a national delivery partner for 1800RESPECT, Dr Tobin leads a frontline organisation providing crisis response, residential, court support, and specialist services for people with disability.

She has also served on the Board of Outlook Australia, a national disability organisation.

Having seen first-hand the life-changing impact that organisations like genU can have on families, combined with her extensive experience leading 24/7 community service provision and her strong commercial acumen, Dr Tobin is well placed to lead genU in achieving its strategic ambitions.

“The Board is immensely pleased to appoint Chelsea to this role. Her skills and experience will enable genU to strengthen its national presence and assist to drive our strategic ambitions,” said Ingrid Fraser-Williams, genU’s Board Chair.

“With a team of over 5,000 employees nationally, genU is now one of Australia’s largest care providers and we are passionate about continuing to build genuinely inclusive communities and enrich lives across Australia, furthering our positive impact,” said Ms Fraser-Williams.

Dr Tobin will commence in the role on 27 January 2026.

“genU’s purpose to enrich lives through connections, supports and opportunities resonates deeply with me,” said Dr Tobin.

“I’m looking forward to working with the team to continue delivering for our clients and advocating to ensure everyone has the opportunity to thrive”.

Dr Tobin’s appointment follows an extensive search led by specialist recruitment agency Spencer Stuart, and a robust multi-layered interview process.

Dr Tobin will be succeeding Clare Amies who has been CEO for the national organisation for over five years. Ms Amies announced her decision to step down from the role in April this year, however committed to remaining connected with the organisation until a successor could be appointed

Ms Amies has led the organisation through a period of significant complexity and transformation, including the COVID pandemic, a Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability, and reforms in the employment and aged care sectors.

During her tenure, she has strengthened genU’s financial sustainability, enhanced governance practices, and through strategic acquisitions—including Li-Ve Tasmania and West Australian-based Activ Foundation—has grown its presence nationally.

Ms Amies leaves behind an organisation that is well-positioned to meet the evolving needs of the people it serves.

“The Board is deeply grateful to Clare Amies for the significant improvements she has delivered as genU’s CEO, and for her continued support for the Executive Team and the Board until Dr Tobin commences, ensuring business continuity and stability,” said Ms Fraser-Williams.
