Meet Neil – Aged Care Volunteer Visitor

When Neil moved to the Bellarine Peninsula, he began volunteering at a local op shop — but soon realised he wanted a new way to connect with others.

Having previously worked in a country hospital and residential aged care home, Neil discovered how much he enjoyed spending time with older people and hearing their stories. A quick Google search led him to genU’s Aged Care Volunteer Visitors Scheme (ACVVS) in June 2024.

“It started off as volunteering to meet JobSeeker obligations,” Neil admits, “but it has grown to be so much more than that. This is something that makes you feel good — and I’ll continue doing it.”

Neil now visits three older gentlemen in their homes on a regular basis and calls another twice a week for a friendly chat. His visits are filled with conversation, storytelling, and the occasional recipe swap.

“When I arrive, I’m greeted with a big smile,” Neil says. “People have so much joy in speaking about their life. Sometimes I’ll say it’s time to go, and they’ll reply, ‘Hang on, let me tell you something else!’”

As an enthusiastic walker and camper, Neil encourages his clients to get outdoors and stay active.

“One client only goes for a walk when I visit,” he says. “I’ll say, ‘Come on, let’s go get a coffee,’ and he’ll walk up to the shops with me. His wife says it makes an enormous difference to his wellbeing for days afterwards.”

For Neil, the joy is mutual.

“Seeing joy on people’s faces and being welcomed with a smile — that’s what makes me happy,” he says.

Through his role as an Aged Care Volunteer Visitor, Neil has become more aware of how easy it is for older people to become isolated — and how important it is to stay connected.

“Volunteering has helped me realise that caring for people in our communities is really important,” Neil reflects. “Having someone visit regularly helps people feel valued, safe and visible.”
