Charges laid over suspected historic fraud targeting genU

genU welcomes recent developments in a long-running Victoria Police investigation into alleged fraud that targeted the organisation’s finances. Throughout this process, our priority has remained unchanged: continuity of high-quality services to clients. We are committed to accountability, recovering funds where possible, and ensuring resources are directed to their intended purpose.

In February 2023, genU reported suspected fraud to Victoria Police following an internal investigation into suspicious financial activity involving accounts that were allegedly wrongfully charged to the not-for-profit organisation.

Victoria Police has now laid criminal charges against the parties alleged to be involved.

genU Chief Executive Officer, Dr Chelsea Tobin, said the organisation was deeply disappointed to have been targeted in this way but remains focused on its purpose and the delivery of services to the community.

"For someone to take advantage of a not-for-profit organisation that provides important supports and services to vulnerable members of the community is deeply disappointing," Dr Tobin said.

Alongside the police investigation, genU has undertaken civil legal proceedings against those alleged to be involved and is seeking to recover as much of the misappropriated funds as possible.

"We remain strong and continue to be supported by our incredible employees across Australia, who provide high-quality services every day and demonstrate unwavering commitment to our clients, their families and carers, and our purpose of enriching lives through connections, supports and opportunities," said Dr Tobin.

"I am proud that we have not allowed this matter to distract us from delivering trusted support for our clients or from maintaining the high standards with which we conduct our business."

Holding those responsible to account and seeking to recover the allegedly misappropriated funds is important to genU so those vital resources can be directed to their intended purpose of building genuinely inclusive communities.

The alleged fraudulent activity is understood to have occurred over a five-year period between 2015 and 2021. Throughout that time, all genU funded services were delivered, client obligations were met, and contracts were fulfilled. genU ensured relevant government agencies, regulatory authorities and key stakeholders were informed of the matter.

As soon as the suspected fraud was identified, genU implemented additional controls and safeguards to strengthen its systems and reduce the risk of similar conduct occurring in the future.

Dr Tobin said the organisation remains committed to its clients, stakeholders and employees, and to maintaining the highest standards of integrity, accountability and community service.

As the matter is before the courts, genU will not comment further on the criminal proceedings.
