genU clients think outside the box to support local businesses
With International Box Day marked on June 19, it’s a great opportunity to recognise a group of genU clients who like to do their bit for the environment.
Every week during term, four to five genU clients from Cox Road enjoy getting out in the van, with the trailer in tow, to help various shops in Belmont, Geelong to recycle cardboard boxes.
The cardboard recycling program has been running in different guises for at least 20 years at Cox Road, meaning thousands of boxes have been recycled.
At each stop, they pick up cardboard boxes for recycling, saving the shops from having to dispose of the cardboard themselves. Every shop also makes a small financial donation for the service, which goes towards a well-earned drink and snack for morning tea after the work is finished.
Clients, including Podraig, Ash, Caleb and Johnny don’t waste time collecting the boxes and depositing them in the trailer. When the trailer is full, it’s off to the recycling centre to make the delivery.
One of the clients’ favourite boxes to recycle are the ones that contain pizza, which they have as a treat at the end of every term.
genU CEO Clare Amies said these types of activities give genU clients a real sense of giving back and pride in helping others.
“We are always seeking ways for our clients to create connections, so they feel valued and genuinely part of their community,” Clare said.
“Contributing in this way plays such a positive role, connecting with local businesses and doing something environmentally friendly.”
