Meet Ryan - genU Connections TV Host, DJ & All-Round Legend
If you’ve spent any time around genU’s Connections Media program, chances are you’ve come across Ryan Schmitdke – either behind a microphone, spinning tracks at a disco, or grinning from the TV screen, asking you if pineapple belongs on pizza (true or false?).
With a passion for storytelling, music, and community, Ryan is one of those people who makes you feel like you’re part of something the minute you meet him.
From Covid curiosity to TV Celebrity
Ryan's media journey began five years ago during the long, strange days of Covid lockdowns.
While many of us were panic-buying toilet paper and baking banana bread, Ryan was saying ‘Yes’ to an interesting offer from his mate, Lee: “Wanna be on a show?”
Since then, he’s been on genU Connections TV hosting his own weekly segment, Ryan Titus, where he challenges viewers to decide if facts are true or false. (Spoiler: Ryan always knows the answer.)
Among the plethora of guests Ryan interviews and elicits insights from, there is a favourite he likes getting in front of the microphone whenever he gets the chance.
“I love interviewing musicians. I recently got to interview Sam Hansan from 10 High Fly. Everyone’s got a story, and I love hearing them.”
Ryan’s favourite question to ask is, ‘Who's your favourite artist and song - and why?’ It’s the kind of question that gets people smiling, reminiscing, and sometimes even belting out a chorus or two.
Speaking of great pairings, Ryan has found an ideal co-host in Shannon, who demonstrates all the characteristics of a solid wing man.
“We support each other when interviewing and push each other to try new things,” Ryan says.
“Kind of like the Batman and Robin of community media – if Robin also moonlighted as a DJ!”
Shine On, You Crazy Ryan! (A nod to Pink Floyd)
The Shine On Recognition Awards in Geelong celebrate the contributions of individuals with disabilities. Hosted by the Rotary Club of Geelong East, the awards recognise individuals with physical, intellectual, mental health, or chronic illness who have made outstanding contributions to their communities.
Ryan’s dedication to making a positive impact in his community hasn’t gone unnoticed.
He was nominated for a Shine On Award and feels proud about the recognition he received with a certificate for his service to the community. “I feel like I’m inspiring others,” he says, which is exactly what he’s doing.
genU Community Connections Facilitator Elaine Onekawa, who nominated Ryan, agrees: “He always puts his hand up to try new things, meet new people, and give anything a go. Ryan uses his voice to empower others living with disability to be included in their communities.”
A genU journey worth sharing
For Ryan, genU has been more than just programs and events – it’s been a major platform for personal growth.
“They make me feel valued, seen and heard. Through Connections Media, I’ve learned so much. My confidence and communication have improved. I’m a happier person because of genU.”
So next time you see Ryan on screen or behind the DJ decks, give him a wave – or better yet, ask him about his favourite song. Just be ready to answer a true or false question right back!
