Supporting inclusive participation in the 2026 Census
Every five years, the Australian Census provides a snapshot of the people and communities that make up our nation. The information collected helps shape future planning, funding and services, making it one of Australia's most important national surveys.
For people living with disability, participating in the Census is an opportunity to ensure their experiences, circumstances and needs are accurately represented. This is especially important during a period of significant reform, when quality data helps inform decisions that affect individuals, communities and services across the country.
On Tuesday 11 August, support workers across genU Supported Independent Living (SIL) homes will assist residents to participate in the 2026 Census in ways that are accessible, respectful and tailored to individual needs.
Hoa, genU Support Worker, said supporting people to participate in the Census is about helping every voice be heard.
"We want to advocate for the people we support so their messages and voices are heard. It's about supporting each person as an individual, beyond their disability, and helping them contribute to society."
Whether it's explaining the purpose of the Census, helping people access accessible resources, or supporting them to complete their Census with the appropriate consent and assistance in place, our teams will be there to help make participation as simple and inclusive as possible.
Barb Cronin, State Manager Victoria, said ensuring people with disability are represented in the Census is an important step towards building more inclusive communities.
"Every person counted in the Census helps build a more inclusive Australia. When genU SIL clients complete the 2026 Census, they help ensure that future decisions, services and investments reflect their real needs."
To support participation, the Australian Bureau of Statistics has developed a range of accessible Census resources, including Easy Read guides, Auslan videos, screen reader-compatible online forms, large print and Braille forms, and support through the National Relay Service. These options help ensure more Australians can take part in a way that suits their needs.
By supporting residents in our Supported Independent Living homes to participate in the 2026 Census, genU is helping ensure every voice is heard and every experience counts, contributing to a future where communities are more inclusive and responsive to people's needs.
Libby, genU Supported Independent Living resident, said taking part in the Census was an opportunity to have her voice counted.
"People like me need to be heard and counted as members of society. Completing the Census means I can contribute to the country in my own way."
