Tara’s Dream receives generous car donation, expanding independence for residents
A generous donation is making a meaningful difference at Tara’s Dream supported accommodation in Ocean Grove, increasing choice and independence through the addition of a shared vehicle.
Since opening its doors in 2019, Tara’s Dream has provided modern, accessible and well-located accommodation for nine residents. Named in honour of Tara McGowan (pictured below), who tragically passed away at the age of 23 while studying to become a Special Needs Teacher, the home reflects her dedication to supporting young people with disability to live independently within their community. It also represents years of campaigning by local families who worked tirelessly to create more supported accommodation opportunities for their loved ones.
That vision continues today through the ongoing support of families and the wider community.
Most recently, Ross, whose son Henry has been a resident since the accommodation opened, donated a Toyota Camry for shared residential use.
From social outings and appointments to everyday activities, the added vehicle is expanding options for residents, while also helping staff respond more easily to residents’ plans and preferences.
House Manager Kelli Dawber says the additional vehicle is key to increasing choice and connection:
“The addition of a car will make a huge difference to the lives of the residents at Tara's Dream. Having access to a second vehicle gives residents the freedom to make spontaneous decisions to go out, greatly enhancing their independence and overall quality of life. Being able to support and encourage this level of freedom and choice is incredibly rewarding for our staff as well.
On behalf of all residents and staff at Tara's Dream, thank you for your kindness and generosity, it is deeply appreciated.”
Tara’s Dream is a spacious Supported Independent Living (SIL) home, with a five-bedroom residence and staff accommodation, as well as a second block featuring a two-bedroom house and two one-bedroom units. Shared outdoor spaces support both independent living and connection between residents.
The development was made possible through the dedication of Tara’s parents, Steve and Karen McGowan, who established the Tara’s Dream Foundation and raised $300,000 towards the project. Their contribution, alongside continued community advocacy, is creating a lasting tribute to Tara’s vision.
genU extends sincere thanks to Ross for this generous gift, and to everyone who continues to support Tara’s Dream and other genU programs.
