Winter Warmth Community Care a hot new initiative to support jobseekers in Geelong

MatchWorks participants seeking employment in the Geelong region have received a warm boost with winter now flexing its muscles in Victoria.

On Wednesday 11 June, MatchWorks - genU's disability employment service - hosted its first Winter Warmth Community Care Packs Program to provide essential items to jobseekers in need this winter.

Held at the MatchWorks office at Corio Village, Geelong, as part of the latest MatchWorks All About You Day, the Winter Warmth initiative was conceived and facilitated by Deakin University placement students.

Almost 20 local businesses, including Geelong Foodshare, Macpac, Coles, Officeworks and Spotlight, donated items included food vouchers, blankets, jackets, beanies and personal care items. Using the donated goods, Deakin students created more than 50 care packs to distribute to MatchWorks participants, using tote bags donated by Member for Lara, Ella George.

As a leading disability employment service, MatchWorks is committed to supporting participants in a variety of ways. This initiative is another step toward ensuring people are equipped and confident to pursue meaningful employment.

MatchWorks General Manager Sue Osman said the initiative was particularly important for participants facing complex challenges.

“Some of the people we work with may be experiencing financial hardship or are at risk of homelessness,” Sue said.

“We help people overcome barriers and find sustainable employment, empowering them to build the best future they can.”

Sue said All About You Days were designed to help participants become job-ready and feel confident about their next steps.

“Along with receiving a Winter Warmth pack, participants could access training and upskilling opportunities, information about different industries and in-demand roles and free health and wellbeing services,” she said.

MatchWorks Employer Engagement Partners and Post placement support were available to talk to participants, and genU My Community Mental Health and Social Support were present to talk to people about the weekly social group, which helps people grow their confidence and social skills.

Deakin University Social Work Placement Student Curley Rukweza said she had enjoyed organising the Winter Warmth Community Care Pack Program and gained a confidence boost from liaising with potential sponsors.

“The most rewarding part of the program was the level of gratitude shown by the community,” Curley said.

“I feel good about the positive feedback we received from participants today, who really appreciated everything. Knowing I’ve been able to help people makes my whole placement worth it.”

State Labor Member for Lara, Ella George was proud to be involved in the initiative and delighted to donate to such a worthwhile cause to support locals.

“I congratulate the MatchWorks Corio team for their ‘Winter Warmth: Community Care Packs’ project, a project which makes a meaningful impact and helps brighten the winter months for local families in our community,” Ms George said.

“By coming together to support those facing difficult times, not only are essential items provided, but individuals are also shown that they are not alone in their struggles.”

MatchWorks participant Kelly said the initiative made her feel seen and valued.

“It means a lot because it makes me feel like we are seen as more than just jobseekers and we are appreciated,” Kelly said.

As a member of the genU Social Group and Photography Group, Kelly was grateful to choose a scarf from the clothing selection, which she plans to wear while out taking photos during winter.

Fellow participant Judith described the Winter Warmth initiative as “awesome” and praised the MatchWorks team for hosting such a positive and supportive event.

“I was surprised by what was being offered – I’ve never seen anything like this before. I got some warm work socks and the fruit and veg won’t go astray,” she said.

“Everyone at the MatchWorks office is always very friendly and they make you feel welcome here, no matter who you are.”
