Meet Leonie

Leonie Walker OAM has spent more than 50 years advocating for people with intellectual disability and their families, helping shape services and opportunities across Western Australia.

Her connection with Activ began in 1975, when it was known as the Slow Learning Children’s Group (SLCG). Living on a farm with her husband Doug and their two sons, both of whom have intellectual disability, Leonie joined the organisation so her eldest son could access specialist schooling and accommodation in Perth. At the time, support options for regional families were extremely limited.

Wanting to give back, Leonie became actively involved in fundraising and helped establish accommodation that enabled children from rural communities to access special education closer to home. After moving to Dunsborough, she continued her involvement through local and regional leadership roles, becoming a strong advocate for country families and people with intellectual disability.

Over the years, Leonie served on the inaugural Disability Services Commission Board, the Minister’s Advisory Council and the Activ Board from 2006 to 2016. She also played an important role in the development of what is now Future Living Trust and remains a Life Member and Ambassador. Her contribution to Activ has also been recognised through Life Membership and her appointment as an Honorary Life Governor.

Leonie’s dedication to community service has been recognised with the Centenary Medal in 2001 and the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in 2015.

Throughout this journey, Doug has been a constant source of support. Together, Leonie and Doug have shared a lifelong commitment to strengthening opportunities for people with intellectual disability. Their philanthropy is very much a partnership, grounded in the belief that organisations supporting people with disability should continue to thrive for future generations. In 2022, they made a remarkable $250,000 donation to Activ, helping strengthen support and opportunities for people with disability.

Leonie’s message is a simple but powerful one: every person with disability is unique, with their own strengths, needs and aspirations. Her lifelong advocacy, generosity and leadership, alongside Doug’s unwavering support, continue to leave a lasting impact on the disability community and the many families it supports.

Cafe Jan and Splinters Inn officially open

What was once the old gym and workshop at St Laurence Park retirement village has been thoughtfully transformed into a vibrant, shared space where residents, families and visitors can come together.

Café Jan now sits at the heart of the precinct, alongside Splinters Inn — providing a welcoming hub that blends the feel of a café with a sports bar, games room, art space and workshop.

This project was made possible through the generous support of Janice Boyd, a former resident of St Laurence Park, along with Bisinella Developments, BBL, Boomaroo Nurseries, Lara Quality Meats and RL Signs.

Importantly, all proceeds from Café Jan will go directly to the Residents’ Fund, supporting future opportunities, activities and experiences for the St Laurence Park community.
