Supporting George through life's next chapter
Born and raised in Geelong to English parents, Ivor "George" Dadds has always called the region home.
After working as a pattern maker, George built a life with his wife, Valma, whom he met while they were both working in Melbourne. Married for more than 60 years, they shared a lifetime together, with George becoming Valma's devoted primary carer as she lived with dementia. During that time, they treasured simple moments together, including early morning walks along the beach in Queenscliff.
For many years, genU supported Val while George cared for her with unwavering dedication and compassion, helping the couple remain connected to the life they had built together.
Following Valma's passing, George faced a new chapter. Like many carers, he suddenly found himself living alone and without the formal supports that had previously been in place through his wife's care.
Recognising this change, George's daughter, Penelope, referred him to genU so he could receive support in his own right. Today, George receives support through a Level 4 Support at Home package, helping him continue living safely and independently in the home he built and loves.
Since receiving support, George has embraced new routines and interests. He welcomed a dog named Winter into his home, finding comfort and companionship in his four-legged friend. He has also discovered a love of baking, keeping busy while adjusting to a new chapter of life.
George speaks warmly of Val and the life they shared together. While his role as a carer has come to an end, his story is a powerful reminder of the dedication carers show every day.
It also highlights the importance of carers receiving support themselves, particularly when their caring role comes to an end. Accessing support early can make all the difference when circumstances change, helping people maintain their independence, confidence and connection to their community.
His advice to others is simple: while you're caring for someone you love, don't forget to care for yourself too. Registering with My Aged Care early can help ensure support is available when you need it.
