Accessing Home Care Package (HCP) services through genU has enabled Charlie to keep living independently at home and enjoy life on her terms.
Charlie had been living alone since her beloved husband passed away several years ago and cherished her family visits. When daughter, Karen moved next door to be nearer, she was thrilled to have her so close by.
“I was so happy to have Karen nearby,” Charlie said.
Recently widowed, Karen worked a permanent, part-time night shift at the local nursing home so wanted to make sure her mother was looked after when she wasn’t with her. The Australian Government subsidised HCP seemed like a good solution; Charlie could be supported at home with personal care, shopping assistance, meal preparation and domestic assistance while giving Karen peace of mind while she navigated night shift work and a day sleep schedule.
“I had heard about Home Care Packages and thought it might be a good option for Mum while I was still working,” Karen said. Charlie was open to utilising the services Karen had organised through a local provider, and clicked immediately with her first carer, Catherine.
“Mum looked forward to the visits, but the service from her original provider was unreliable; the carers kept changing or cancelling,” Karen said.
It was Charlie’s sister who recommended she make the change to genU almost two years ago after receiving outstanding service from her Case Manager, Cath Munns.
“We changed to genU and saw a vast improvement in reliability and communication,” Karen said. “Catherine followed, and she and Mum have become very close.”
Charlie has been accessing Level 4 Home Care Package support for six years now and adores her support worker, Catherine.
“We’ll have a chat and a cup of tea, I look forward to seeing her,” Charlie said. “I prefer to stay home as much as I can, and it’s lovely to have Catherine visit me.”
“Catherine is always there for Mum,” Karen said. “I visit Mum every day but if I didn’t have the services through the Home Care Package, I would have to do everything and wouldn’t be able to work.
“Mum would like to stay home as long as possible, and I would like that too. Finding the right Home Care Package services through genU have made that a reality.”
When it comes to genU Home Care Package support, Charlie said she couldn’t ask for anything better.
“My family comes in and it’s really, really great; I’m really pleased.”
