Priscilla secures dream traineeship in childcare

genU School Leaver Employment Supports has given Priscilla the opportunity to discover a passion for childcare and start a traineeship.

The Geelong school leaver identified industries of interest through the comprehensive process with her genU employment mentor. With hospitality and childcare top of the list, Priscilla developed an action plan with a number of SMART goals to gain experience and secure employment.

Priscilla participated in a series of hospitality industry work experience opportunities to build on her employability skills and knowledge. She enjoyed learning kitchen hand, customer service and cleaning skills along the way.

This led to two days a week of paid employment as a kitchenhand at Pipsqueaks Early Learning Centre in Lara. genU provided further support by delivering Disability Awareness Training to the Pipsqueaks team.

Priscilla became a valued member of the Pipsqueaks team over time and realised she loved the idea of working with the children. She has now secured a childcare traineeship at Pipsqueaks, working four days a week in the centre and travelling one day a week to Melbourne to complete TAFE qualifications.

“I love working with kids,” Priscilla said. “They are wonderful little personalities and communicate well. I feel safe and respected by the staff. “genU helped to find and recommend me for the position with Pipsqueaks and the volunteering has given me some great experiences. “

“My supports at genU have always been supportive and encouraging.” – Priscilla

The genU team continues to deliver ongoing post placement support twice a week to Priscilla, the Pipsqueaks team and parents as required. They look forward to seeing her continue to achieve her employment goals.
