Showing the world what’s possible with a disability: Tahlia’s story

Tahlia is achieving her goals with the unwavering support of her family and genU’s Employment Pathways services. From her job at KFC to obtaining a driver’s license, purchasing her own car, and now becoming a homeowner, the 24-year-old who lives with a cognitive disability is a shining example of what’s possible with determination and support.

“She doesn’t view herself as being anybody different,” her dad Raymond said when talking about his daughter’s journey.

“She has goals, the same as everybody else. She has proven that where she is now, and the things she has achieved now are all above and beyond what I thought she was capable of.”

Throughout her journey, a diverse range of work experience opportunities facilitated by genU have enabled Tahlia to discover her strengths and areas for growth. In addition, genU has been instrumental in supporting her to build essential life and job skills, including:

  • Enhanced verbal communication and self-confidence
  • Independent travel on public transport
  • Preparing her to be work-ready.

Tahlia also received personalised support throughout the application process for a customer service position at KFC in Colac. Once she secured the role, the job was tailored to her strengths and abilities with genU’s guidance. Continuous on-the-job support from genU ensures Tahlia’s sustained success in the workplace and her family are immensely proud of her achievements.
